January Date Nights started for me and my marriage. But it has evolved into a whole lot more. While I think of date nights as being near impossible with young children I have come to learn date nights can be challenging at any stage, for different reasons.
Meet Michelle & Alan. This couple has been participating the last two years and they are the cutest! They are also newlyweds but still have busy lives so know they had to make date nights a priority.

I’ve always had pretty mixed feelings about January. On the one hand it is the start of the new year (yay!), there’s a whole bunch of winter sports to look forward to, and I’ve just come off of a long(ish) break. On the other hand, the gym is full of a bunch of new people, it’s dark, and it’s cold, all the time. In Boston, it is very cold. However, for the past three years, January is a month that I’ve really looked forward to, largely thanks to January Date Nights. Encouraged by January Date Nights, my husband and I have explored Boston’s many neighborhoods, tried out new restaurants, returned to our favorite places, supported local businesses, and spent quality time in each other’s company. Our academic commitments, medical school for me and a PhD in applied math for him, leave us very busy, and it becomes all too easy to push off dates for later… for when we are less stressed, have less homework, and are less sleep deprived. The goal that January Date Nights sets out for couples, 5 dates in January (one per week), challenges my husband and I to make time for each other’s company regardless of outside stressors, and reinforces the value of having fun with each other. The community with which we share our dates provides date ideas and inspiration. The questions that Janelle asks and the prizes we can win are just fun. Several of the highlights for January Date Nights this year include hiking in the Blue Hills Reservation, getting ice cream at local shop called J.P. Licks, and ordering Thai takeout for a game night at home. I hope to carry the spirit of January Date Nights through the rest of the year.
