Our kid’s school has an auction every 2 years to raise money. Two years ago the theme was “Live at the Peppermint Lounge”. We weren’t sure what that meant so we did a little research and came up with these outfits. There were quite a few people there and only a handful of people dressed to the theme. But we didn’t care and had a ton of fun. When the evening was over we knew we would be dressing to the theme for the next auction.
(I wasn’t voted Most School Spirit for nothing)
The theme for this year was announced about 6 months ago. Anchors Aweigh. I asked my sister for some help since her husband is in the Navy and she was ready to loan us one of his uniforms. But just as I was about to nail down our outfit, Brad came up with the idea of Gilligan and Mary Ann. I didn’t hesitate. This was perfect for us.
So, how did we help Brad look like Gilligan?
A friend had a Gilligan costume but we decided in the end to upgrade the shirt. This is what Brad eventually went with. You can buy it here.
He also bought some new “Boat Shoes”. Buy them here.
The hat we borrowed worked perfectly but if you need to get one they can be found here.
If you remember any of Gilligan’s Island you may recall that Mary Ann had lots of looks but I tried to emulate this look as best as I could.
My first search was for a gingham shirt. I was trying to find a short sleeve but I also knew we weren’t on a tropical island so I needed something that might keep me a little warm too. The date of the auction was on the tail end of winter and in the evening.
I finally found this that worked out well. You can find it here.
I had some capri jeans that I decided to wear. Brad would have preferred the short shorts but remember we aren’t in the tropics and I was all about comfort.
Of course, my outfit also needed some boat shoes, AKA comfortable Dancing shoes.
You can find these at Target. Here
I put the finishing touches on Mary Ann by adding some ribbon to my pigtails.
We had a TON of fun at the auction and aside from a few Captain’s hats, there weren’t very many people dressed to the theme.
We were a hit!
And to make it even better I had jeans on and some comfortable shoes. My cup of tea!
What is your favorite theme to dress to?
