Before we had kids, we had lots of adventures including a few backpacking trips. In fact, the 2nd half of our honeymoon was a backpacking trip to Upper Lena Lake. We have great memories of a peaceful lake, reading books and being really stinky. Since our kids were born we haven’t been able to backpack with just the two of us. We have done a few backpacking trips as a family but they aren’t the same.
We actually had plans to climb Mt. Adams but the weather kept us from attempting a summit. Since our childcare was already figured out we were left wondering what to do. Our backpacks were ready to go and I wanted to do something active, so we decided on a one night backpacking trip.
We weren’t sure to go so asked a few friends for ideas but finally settled on an area near Cle Elum. It was actually close to where our kids were camping.
We stopped by to see them and then headed out. We weren’t sure how long it would take us so we were going kind of quickly. 4 miles on a pretty flat trail had us up at the campsite with plenty of time before it got dark. It’s amazing how time kind of stands still when its just the two of us and we have nothing distracting us.
Two things I took away from this adventure. I hope we can do this again soon. And I really hope my body is able to backpack 15 years from now when our kids are older and we can go more frequently.
